What is a trickster?

As for Pa Padir, his shenanigans range from simple and harmless, to deadly and irrational. Yet at no point in time does Pa Padir do anything intentionally harmful or mean to another. As quoted here by UXL Encyclopedia of World Mythology, most tricksters have a childlike demeanor, which fits Pa Padir well as you will note his bossiness toward his wife as well as his constant quest for food and sweets.

While not typically considered purely good or evil, tricksters operate outside the rules of society. Often childish, greedy, lustful, and even nasty, tricksters can also be friendly, helpful, clever, and wise. Sometimes they appear to be clownish, clumsy, or foolish, although they usually possess amazing powers of survival. A trickster may come to a sorry end in one story but then, after being miraculously brought back to life, reappear in other tales. Sometimes a trickster is a creator or culture hero whose activities explain how some aspect of the world came into being. While tricksters are often shown to be selfish, silly, or wrongheaded, they also help people identify with the situations and lessons contained in these myths. In addition, tricksters provide entertaining moments that remind readers and listeners that myths are meant to be enjoyed and shared from generation to generation.

For example take the incident where Daddy Moron (Pa Padir) brings home a billy-goat:

One day Ma Andeh (Daddy's Moron's wife) told him to go and Invite Haji Musa, the local priest, for a meal in his honor. Again, he asked her to describe what he was supposed to bring home.

"You will easily recognize him." Said his wife, "he has a white beard."
So, Pa Pandir went out and came back with a big old billy-goat whose white beard indeed looked venerable.
　

As you can see, Pa Padir or Daddy Moron, thought he was doing what was asked of him, but if he would have thought a little harder or used some common sense he might have come out more successful in his task. His mind was working on such a basic level that he was careless in his actions, yet he is a loveable character thanks to his silliness. By no means did this mistake of his cause his ultimate demise or harm anyone but he sure did mess things up for his wi!
